Books introduced me to worlds, people, and ideas that reached across space and time to the heart of New York City, where I grew up. Amid concrete, steel and glass skyscrapers the was a portal, The New York Public Library, where one could become a Time Lord. Boys and girls with a library card had access to ancient Rome, the Amazon rain forest, the American Civil War, the Cabala and Julia Child. Years in the future when they find our libraries, the will say they were temples of worship. Not far off that!
